Band and Strings Strings, Kelley.Williams@fcps.edu Mr. Emery's Band Blackboard (FCPS 24/7) site can be found at the following link if you log onto blackboard first:
Instrumental band instruction is offered in the fifth and sixth grade. Instrumental string instruction is offered in grades four, five, and six. The programs include beginning experience, ensemble experiences, and in most cases, Area Band or Area Orchestra, where students from several schools have the opportunity to perform in a large group. Students start their instruction at the beginning level and move on to ensemble experience in the second year. Participation in these programs will establish a foundation of playing and practicing skills, as well as ensemble techniques for continuing development of the student. All of these offerings are taught by an instrumental specialist. It is expected that students commit to the program for the entire school year. Students in band or strings receive one 45-minute period of instruction per week. Enrollment is based on permission of the parents and guidance by the instructor in choosing the most appropriate instrument for the student. The selection of band instruments may include flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, cornet/trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. The selection of string instruments may include violin, viola, cello, and bass. As instrumental instruction does occur during the school day, students are held responsible for any classwork and assignments missed during the time they are in band or strings. Students who may also participate in Area Band or Area Orchestra must have a commitment to rehearse and perform outside of the normal school hours. Band and String performances will generally occur in the evening in the school gymnasium. Instruments and equipment are expected to be provided by the students. Instrument rental is available through local music stores, although a minimal number of instruments are available for rental from Fairfax County Public Schools. More information about instrument rental can by requested from the instrumental specialists.
