General Description

There are three art specialists on staff at Fort Belvoir Elementary School. The art program involves K-6 students in learning about two- and three-dimensional art forms. Art lessons are taught so that students experience a sequence of activities which include skills, processes, and communicating with art media as well as studying art history and appreciation. The lessons are structured so that students engage in activities which are appropriate for their intellectual and physical maturity and utilize and build on life experiences as well as knowledge from other subjects.

Students experience art lessons taught by classroom teachers at appropriate times in the daily program, as well as interdisciplinary lessons taught by classroom teachers and art teachers so that art and other subjects are enriched by the combination.

Categories of Art Education

The goals and objectives in art require students to extend their knowledge and capabilities in each of the following categories:

  • Art Production
Students produce drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, and art crafts.
  • Discussion of Art
Students look at art critically and discuss art they have made, art made by their peers, and art made by recognized artists.
  • Art History
Students study art in relation to the time and place it was created and learn about artists and art movements.
  • Aesthetics/Appreciation
Students use all of the components used by artists to communicate concepts when they create art and study the components found in art made by recognized artists.

As a result of art instruction students enjoy making and seeing art. They also understand the contributions of art to world cultures and become aware of the significance of art in our society.
