Beginning Reading FAQ:

Question #1: How can I make reading an adventure for my child?

Answer: Young children naturally love and trust you, and (sometimes!) are an attentive audience that you can work with one-to-one. Be patient, and provide plenty of encouragement, and you can make learning to read adventurous and fun!

Question #2: How can I be a reading role model?

Answer: The most important thing parents and caregivers can do to help their children succeed in school is read aloud to them everyday. Reading aloud to children also helps them learn to read.

Question #3: How can I get my child to explore reading?

Answer: Children are inquisitive by nature, always looking for something to occupy their busy minds. You do not need to spend a lot of money on fancy books or reading programs to start your child on the path of reading. Here are some suggestions for exploring reading:

  • Keep books, magazines and newspapers in your home to give to your child
  • Tape labels to objects in your home
  • Help your child see how people use reading and writing through daily events
  • Work on your home computer
  • Outside the home, point out signs, labels, and logos to your child
  • Visit libraries, bookstores, newsstands, and other places where books can be found

Question #4: When is a good time to read with my child?

Answer: The time for books is ALL the time. Read, Read, Read books to your child. Set aside some time everyday to read to your child.

Question #5: How do I get started making reading a vital part of my child's life?

Answer: It's very easy and not too late to start by:

  • Keep a library in your child's room to teach him of her that books are an important part of your home environment. Examples of good books can be joke books, picture books, interactive books, popup books, fairy tales, homemade books.
  • Select a special reading place like a rug, rocking chair, or small couch to create a warm, inviting reading environment. Let your child sit in your lap and let them hold the book and turn the pages.
  • Familiarize yourself with the book before reading it. This will make you a better storyteller.
  • It doesn't matter what, where, how you read to your child- the important thing is that you fit reading into your schedule.
