Holidays & Traditions

In first grade, students examine holidays and traditions. Here are some examples:

Thanksgiving Day
Veteran's Day
President's Day
Independence Day

Winter Holidays Around the World.

Map Skills

Students learn basic map skills. Here are some indicators:

•Identify north, south, east, west and the compass rose on a map.
•Use maps and globes to locate places from literature read in class.
•Locate the following on simple maps: streets/roads, homes, schools, and local landmarks (banks, post office, etc.)
•Locate the following on maps and globes: Fort Belvoir, Richmond, Virginia, United States, seven continents, and four oceans.

Civics

In first grade, students learn to identify and understand the responsibilities and rights of citizens of the United States. Here are some examples:

  • Participate in school democracy.
  • Give examples of rules and laws.
