In first grade, the students learn many different concepts and operations in math. The students will use a number of different manipulatives to help them understand the concepts and operations. These are a few of the areas which will be covered:
Numbers & Number Sense
Throughout the school year, first grade students should learn to...
- Count objects in a set containing between 10 and 100 objects and write the corresponding numerals.

- Group objects by tens and ones.

- Count by twos, fives, and tens to 100.
|
- Recognize and write numerals 0 through 100.
|
- Identify the ordinal positions first through tenth.
 
|
- Identify and show the concept of one-half and one-fourth.
|
- Count a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes whose value is 100 cents or less.

Computation & Estimation
Throughout the school year, the first graders will be learning to...
- Recall basic addition facts, sums to 10 or less and the corresponding subtraction facts

- Solve story and picture problems using addition and subtraction facts.

- Estimate and add 3 addends,sums to 10.

- Add and subtract doubles.

Geometry
Throughout the year, first graders will learn to....
- Understand the concept of symmetry.

- Recognize, sort, and identify 2-dimensional shapes.

- Explore congruent shapes using concrete materials.

- Identify and sort 3-dimensional solids in the environment.
