Special Education Team

At Freedom Hill, Special Education services are provided to those students whose disabilities make them eligible but whose abilities make them special.  It is the challenge of the special education staff, indeed the entire staff, to understand each student’s abilities, to help them learn despite their disabilities, and to support them in their daily interactions within the Freedom Hill school community.

Sometimes special education teachers and assistants work in the general education classrooms, collaborating with grade level teachers, differentiating instruction, and providing accommodations and modifications for special education students. Other times students work in small groups or in special education classrooms to focus on specific skills.  Additionally, special education students pair up with general education peer buddies and participate in PE, Music or other activities.  All special education students participate in the general education classrooms as much as it is beneficial for them.  An Individual Education Plan (IEP) specifies the supports and services that each student will receive and the goals that the special education staff is working toward with the student.

While the special education staff provide the supports and services necessary for each student to learn, it is the Freedom Hill school community as a whole, teachers, students, parents and administrators, who provide the welcoming, accepting, yet challenging community where all students feel included and special.
