8TH GRADE MATHEMATICS
Full Year Required
Students extend their study of algebra- and geometry-preparatory
concepts and skills and strategies for collecting and analyzing data. Problem solving,
communication, and making connections among mathematical ideas are emphasized in a
hands-on learning environment. The use of calculators and computers is integrated with
instruction.
ALGEBRA I*
Full Year Required
Students study exponents, linear equations and inequalities, graphs in a coordinate
plane, systems of equations, polynomials, rational expressions, radicals, irrational
numbers, and quadratic equations. Calculators and computers are used as tools throughout
the course. Algebra I is the first course in college preparatory mathematics.
The new Algebra I Program of Studies and Virginia State Standards of Learning
call for extended use of graphing calculators. Additionally, since high
school mathematics courses and college entrance, achievement, and advanced
placement examinations require this technology, students should have daily
access to graphics technology. The purchase of their own calculator will
address this need. Although other graphics calculators could be used,
classroom instruction will be based on the Texas Instrument graphics calculator
model TI-83. The graphics calculator purchased at the beginning of Algebra I can
be used throughout the student's high school career.
When taken in grade 8, Algebra I becomes part of the high
school transcript record, is included in the determination of the high school grade point
average (GPA), and counts as one of the required mathematics credits for high school
graduation as well as towards the total credits required for graduation.
*Note: Admission to the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
requires the completion of Algebra I prior to grade 9

Math Tutorial
Math Tutorial is a
student-centered assistance class that mirrors the mathematics curriculum, and
is designed to provide additional small-group instruction in a hands-on learning
environment. The course focuses on fundamental skills.
Placement decisions for this course rest with the principal, after a
comprehensive review of the students' test and assessment data and cumulative
record.
