7TH GRADE ENGLISH

Full Year Required

Students participate in a variety of activities involving reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking skills. Students read a variety of literature, using personal experiences and past reading as aids in the comprehension of content, plot, setting, characters, point of view and mood, in prose and poetry. Through the study of literature, students express their understanding of the attitudes and values of others. Language study includes spelling and vocabulary. Students use language deliberately, confidently, and competently in writing and speaking. Students have access to fully equipped computer labs where much of their writing is processed. Opportunities are also made available for students to publish their writings.

Students become competent and confident writers by freely expressing themselves in a variety of written forms. Composition includes writing sentences, notes, reviews, short poetic forms, dialogues, journals, reading response logs, short stories, and character sketches. The use of computer technology assists the writing process as students are taught to use the word processor in developing written pieces of work. Multimedia activities include determining and applying evaluative criteria for formal speeches; preparing and delivering short speeches; and participating cooperatively and effectively in small group discussions. The English Department also has access to a fully equipped mobile lab.  Students are encouraged to use the Internet as a resource as well as multimedia software to integrate learning across the curriculum.
