The Special
Education Ombudsmen
Parents Supporting
Parents
Fairfax
County Public Schools has expanded support services for families of
students with disabilities. Parents can now access the services of a
special education ombudsman for guidance and support. The eight ombudsmen,
all parents of students who receive special education services, are part
of a network that provides assistance to parents who are navigating the
special education process and feel they can benefit from the advice and
knowledge of a more experienced and specially trained parent. Parent
ombudsmen can provide information about the special education process and
services provided by Fairfax County Public Schools, as well as information
about special education regulations, procedures, and policies. They may
collaborate with parents to assist them in resolving problems in a
positive way.
The ombudsmen are based at
designated schools but may assist parents of special education students
from any school within their cluster. While they are employed part-time
by the school system, their role calls for them to be objective and
impartial in working with parents and schools.
For more information or to request
the services of a special education parent ombudsman, please call the
special education office phone number for your cluster which is listed
below. You may also directly contact the ombudsman for your cluster.

The
Parent
Resource Center,
Fairfax County Public Schools, is offering many new sessions of
Sibshops for children
in grades 2 through 6. Sibshops is a support group for
typical children who have sisters or brothers who receive special
education services. Children’s Sibshops
are lively, pedal-to-the-metal, award-winning celebrations of the many
contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs.
Sibshops
acknowledge that being the brother or sister of a person with special
needs is for some a good thing, for others a not-so-good thing, and for
many, somewhere in between. They reflect a belief that brothers and
sisters have much to offer one another—if they are given a chance.
The Sibshop model mixes information and discussion activities with new
games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a wide ability
range), and special guests.
To learn more about Sibshops, including dates, times, and locations, or
to register your child, visit the Parent Resource Center’s
website at
http://www.fcps.edu/DSSSE/prc
or call 703-204-3941.
