Mr. Lawrence Walker
Mr. Walker, our band director at Franklin Middle School, is an accomplished man who can whip any band into tip-top shape. He has had a great education throughout his life and has had many achievements including a high school diploma at Benjamin Franklin High School in Philadelphia, PA., a B.S. degree in Music Education at Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA., an M.Ed. degree in Music Education at Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA., and an M.Ed degree in Music Performance at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
You may have thought that Mr. Walker just taught at Franklin Middle School for his whole career, but that is wrong. He actually started out teaching in three other schools before coming to Franklin. The first was as band director at Matoaca High School from 1978 to 1983. The second job was as assistant band director at Virginia State University from 1979 to 1981. The final job before coming to Franklin was as band director at Matoaca Middle School from 1980 to 1983.
After all that, Mr. Walker came to Franklin in 1983 when the school opened and has been there ever since. Mr. Walker was nominated for Fairfax County Public Schools Teacher of the Year for 1998. He was also the recipient of the 1997 Baha Community Award for his work in music education. And finally he was honored in the 2000 edition of Who's Who Among American Teachers. This award is selected by the best students in America.
Mr. Walker's career does not end with the school year. He has been an adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the state of Virginia and Maryland. Mr. Walker also founded and has been the director of the Franklin Summer Band and Orchestra Camp since 1985. At the camp last year there were twenty-two teachers and 450 students.
