November 2006 After School Calendar
After School Program Overview
Franklin Middle
School is committed to promoting active participation in extracurricular
activities to support the academic mission and enrich the lives of students.
Students that engage in these programs are more likely to develop positive
attitudes towards school, achieve full academic potential, and become productive
citizens. Students are encouraged to maintain a balance between their
instructional studies, after-school activities, and other outside interests.
Weekly
Schedule
After school activities and late bus transportation
will be offered three days a
week; Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays,
starting the week of October 2, 2006. As a guideline,
students will be dismissed on Mondays at 3:30pm.,
Wednesday and Thursdays students
will be dismissed at 4:30 p.m.
Student
Responsibilities
Students should contact the activity sponsor for a schedule of
events related to their program. All required schedule adjustments will be noted
during morning announcements and/or lunch period
announcements. Students are reminded to make prior arrangements with
their teacher and notify parents (24 hours) before staying after school
for academic assistance. Students are not permitted to exit the building prior
to reporting for an after school activity. If students are present on the bus
ramp or in the kiss and ride area at the regular departure time, they
will be expected to proceed home in the established timely manner. Participants
should report to the activity sponsor by 2:30 p.m. and
a list of students staying after school for an approved extracurricular activity
will be sent to the attendance officer. Only these students will receive late
bus transportation. Students attempting to board late buses without such
approval will be subject to disciplinary action.
Activity Priority
After school programs have been expanded to a third day to
help alleviate potential conflicts and allow students an opportunity to access a
broader range of offerings. If a conflict exists, students should honor their
commitment for academic assistance in their core or high school credited
subjects (math, science, social studies, English, or foreign language) followed
by assigned detentions, assistance in other subject areas, and then enrichment
programs. If conflicts regarding as assigned detention cannot be resolved within
a two week period, teachers should contact their grade level administrator for
assistance.
FCPS Middle School Press
Release
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors,
in collaboration with the Fairfax County School Board, has allocated funds to
establish a comprehensive after-school program in all middle schools in the
county. This joint partnership between the Fairfax County Public Schools
(FCPS) After-School Program Office (ASPO) and the Fairfax County Department of
Community and Recreation Services (DCRS) offers programming and staff support
for five-days a week of after-school activities. It provides a safe haven
for middle school youth to improve academic achievement, improve student
behavior, and reduce risk-taking behaviors and substance abuse. The
following schools will be participating in the start up phase of this program.
Jackson, Glasgow, Herndon, Key, Lake Braddock, Liberty, Poe, Twain, Whitman,
South County, Rocky Run, Kilmer, Thoreau, and Longfellow.
The after-school program
addresses the two strongest risk factors impacting children and youth: (1)
academic difficulties in school and (2) unsupervised time after-school.
These risk factors are the strongest predictors of adolescent substance abuse
and behavior issues. There is solid research evidence showing that
after-school programs reduce youth violence and gang activity, reduce alcohol,
tobacco and drug use, increase school and community connectiveness, and improve
academic achievement.
This Middle School After-School Program design
provides young people with a positive alternative to spending time on the
streets or being home alone an opportunity to develop skills, build character,
and to partake in challenging fulfilling activities. The program design
has four components. They are:
-
Academic Support and Enrichment
-
Social Skills and Youth Development
-
Physical, Health and Recreation Projects
-
Family and Community Involvement
Research indicates that high quality after-school programs can markedly
increase engagement in learning and that students who are engaged in
learning behave better in school, have better work habits, improved
attitudes towards school, a greater sense of belonging to the community, and
better relationships with their parents.
All clubs are open to all students
regardless of sex, race, or ability. We encourage
parents with concerns over whether their child would be successful in a certain
club to
call and talk with Mr. Brookes about those concerns.
