Principal For the Day Abby!

Abby was Principal for the Day at Forestville on May 8th. Abby worked with Mr. Harris and Mrs. Arback during the day as the Principal for the Day. She participated in escorting a teacher candidate around the school, morning announcements, Forestvision, and even extended the 3rd grade recess time by 30 minutes!! Great job Abby!

SWEET FROG Dining for Forestville- Thank You

- A big "Thank You" to all of our families who came out to support Forestville on Thursday Night!    We were told it was a record turn out - -the line was out the door for most of the evening!    It was also great to have the Sweet Frogs visit our school earlier that afternoon!   Thanks to Leslie Hutchinson for organizing all of that for us!

Spirtwear Design Competition Winners

Congratulations to the winner of our Spiritwear design competition, Georgia Orme-Smith, who entered this winning design using the SpiritgearDirect.com website.

Georgia will receive a $30 movie voucher.  Congratulations also to Dan Tran for being the first to enter his design. Dan will have his design produced for free.

Seussical Jr. Performance

The cast of the 5th/6th grade musical Seussical Jr. performed May 4th at the Chantilly Day festival.

Odyssey of the Mind Competition

A team of Forestville Elementary students will represent Virginia for the second year in a row at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals Competition after taking second place in the state level competition, held Saturday in Aldie, Va. Two other teams from Forestville also competed, placing fourth and fifth. 

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative-thinking competition where a team must solve a long-term solution in the form of an original 8-minute skit, and also participate in a short-term problem, usually some kind of structure-building or word game given to the team on-site. 

"Odyssey of the Mind emphasizes teamwork and outside-the-box thinking," said Jeffrey LeLoup, coach and 3rd grade teacher at Forestville. "These are skills necessary to succeed in life and this program celebrates it."

Students on the winning team are: Sydney Pham, Caroline Keys, Jake West, Sarina Bell, Aditya Khera, Cassie Dallas and Jenna Waters. 

The team will travel to Lansing, Mich. on May 22-25 to compete in a four-day World Finals contest that includes more than 900 teams from 30 countries. 

Last year, Forestville students brought home a Renatra Fusca award, which is one of the Odyssey organization's highest award and given to teams displaying exceptionally creative problem solutions.

Pick Up Procedures for After School Activities

There will now be new procedures in place for pick up from After School Activities for classes meeting Tuesday-Friday.   Because the school doors will be locked, and the front office closing at 4:30, all parents are asked to come to the front doors for pick up, where students and their instructors will meet you at 5:00.   Each parent will be asked to sign their child out at that time.  You are asked to wait for your child in the front covered area of the school until they are dismissed by their instructor.    Pick up for Monday classes will still be in their classrooms.

Great Falls Library has started a Pokémon Trading Card Game!  

Ages 5-15 come play the Pokémon Trading Card Game with your friends on Wednesdays from 4:30 - 6:00pm.    You can contact Great Falls Library at 703-757-8560 for more information.    This is a free event.

Kiss and Ride Safety Issues

We still have safety issues concerning traffic and Kiss and Ride:

• Cars should NOT pass other cars in the driveway.
• When children are brought to school by car, they should be unloaded ONLY in the KISS AND RIDE area located along the driveway leading  to the school’s parking lot. For safety reasons, children may NOT be dropped off at the crosswalk in the driveway.
• Cars should form a single line and drop off students when they reach the front of the line AND are directed to do so by a staff member.
• In order to keep the line moving smoothly, we ask that parents remain in their cars. Children should be ready to exit their cars immediately and enter the doors (Entrance 7) near SACC/Art where they will be buzzed in until 9:15 AM.
• The driveway in front of the school building is reserved for BUSES ONLY before and after school. Cars should not be parked in front of the school, either in the driveway, in the turn lane leading to the side driveway, or along Utterback Store Road. 
  
  Our Kiss and Ride staff members are now equipped with whistles and will draw attention to problems. At times in the past, we have had police officers or security stationed there.  However, their jurisdiction is limited in a parking lot .    However, following these rules is important to child and adult safety. 
  Also given some changes in our security, we will no longer be allowing children in the SACC/Art entrance (Entrance 7)after the late bell(9:15 AM).  Those children will need to go to exit 8 near the Dell hallway to be “buzzed in.”  You are also welcome to drop them off in front of the building  if it is after 9:15 AM  for increased security.  Any child who is late should report to the office for a tardy pass.

Parents can now create their own account for FCPS 24-7 Learning. After registering and having their account validated at one of their children’s schools, parents will have their own username and password to access all of their children's available courses, their middle school students’ Academic and Career Planning, their high school students’ career and college planning through Family Connection and will be able to update their children’s emergency information through weCare@school.
