Summer Reading
This summer, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will continue a summer reading requirement in order to encourage reading. Each student completing grades five through eleven is required to read at least one book during the summer months.
Follow-up procedures have been developed by your child’s elementary or middle school, and these will be implemented in the fall. The following links are lists of suggested books for summer reading; however, students may read any book that is comparable to books on this list and approved by their parents. Rising 6th Grader List (current 5th), Rising 7th/8th Grader List (current 6th).
Reading is crucial to academic achievement, and I urge you to encourage your child to read many books over the summer months. I appreciate your help as we all work together to support children’s academic progress.
Sincerely, Matt Harris - Principal Click on the headline to find out, well, what Forestville families need to know. You'll find when class lists will be posted, Back to School Night and Bell Schedules, links to the Parent Handbook and more!
New Keyless Entry System
Forestville has received approval to begin its keyless entry program designed to increase school safety and security.
Beginning Tuesday, May 20th, the front school entrance and SACC entrance(7) will be open until 9:15 AM. After that, all school doors will be locked and will require parents and visitors to press a button near the entrance to gain entrance. Monitors in the building will allow staff members to "buzz" in the parents/visitors based on an audiovisual system. When you approach a school entrance, you will know based on the security hardware if it has
keyless entry access. Not every entrance is accessible through this new method.
Given that Forestville has hundreds of volunteers and visitors each year, we expect there to be a learning curve as we adapt to this new system. We also expect it to improve school security. Forestville will work with the FCPS Security Office and Facilities to insure a smooth transition to the new system.
Thank you!
SACC and the new keyless entry system
The new keyless entry system will affect SACC in a few ways:
- The doors will be open in the morning for Before School SACC, so those of you who use only this service will not be affected.
- During the After School session, the door will be locked at all times and SACC staff will have to "buzz in" all parents and pick up persons.
- On occasions when all SACC staff and children are on the playground, a staff member will walk you to the door and let you in. This will be the practice until a better solution is reached.
