Counseling Program

The counseling program includes the following areas:

Crisis Intervention

  • Providing immediate and follow-up counseling
  • Coordinating of services and resources
  • Conducting needs assessment
  • Providing referrals when necessary

Parental permission is NOT required, although parents may be notofied following intervention. If the student needs continued assistance, parental permission will be obtained.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is a one to one meeting with the counselor to discuss a problem or topic of interest. This conference generally addresses the specific concerns of students with identified needs. Referrals are made by parent, guardian, teacher and/or student. Participation is voluntary and permission is obtained prior to counseling.

Small Group Counseling

Group members have an opportunity to learn from each other. They share ideas, give and receive feedback, increase their awareness, gain new knowledge, practice skills, and think about goals and actions. Group discussions may be problem-centered or growth-centered. Attention is given to particular concerns or topics related to personal and academic development. Participation, which is voluntary and confidential, requires permission from a parent or guardian. Referrals are made by parents and teachers. Classroom teachers are consulted regarding scheduling that is least disruptive to the learning environment. Topics offered might include peer relations, social skills, study and organizational skills, changing families, grief management, anger management, ADD/ADHD, and behavior. Groups usually meet for four to eight sessions.

Counselor Consultant

A counselor is available for consultation with parents, guardians, teachers, staff members and other professionals as needed to help students achieve academic success and to ensure their personal welfare. At times, parents and/or guardians may need long term assistance to better serve the needs of their chidren. Although we do not recommend specific doctors, psychologists, or other professionals, we will provide a list of resources at your request. we would also appreciate your feedback related to your experience in finding an appropriate professional in order to update our list.

Classroom Guidance

Classroom Guidance is a planned, developmental program of activities designed to foster students' academic, career, and personal/social development. Parents may opt-out their children from guidance lessons, and once opted-out, written notice is required to opt-in the student again. Parents are always welcome to discuss or observe a guidance lesson. Lessons focus on the following topics:

  • Citizenship
  • Honsety/ Trust
  • Responsibility
  • Cooperation
  • Caring
  • Self-Disicpline
  • Respect
  • Perserverance
  • Fairness
