Through the Fairfax County Art Program of Studies students learn the disciplines of visual communication and production, cultural context and art history, judgement and criticism, and aesthetics.
Throughout the school year the students in each grade level explore their creativity and imigination through art with the use of different mediums. The basic concepts of drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and stitchery are taught by Natalie Shelton to grades K-6.
In kindergarten, lesson ideas focus on fine motor skills and learning about colors, shapes, and pattern. First graders develop their hand and eye coordination along with the refinement of motor skils. We also look at the five senses and discuss their importance with art. In second grade, animals and insects are observed and explored and then recreated through different art mediums. Third graders study the Greek and Egyptian culture to recreate different forms of pottery and language. Students also learn about the proportions of the face and how to create a landscape using foreground, middleground, and backgrounds.
Fourth grade studies the proportion of the body, gesture drawing and the Colonial Life. In fifth grade, lesson ideas include contour drawing and the study of Medieval times to create castles and ceramic gargoyles. Last, but not least the sixth graders focus on design, style, material, and subject matter. The students create portaits and learn how to make coil baskets.
