Welcome to the wonderful world of kindergarten! We are very excited to be a part of your child’s learning adventure! Kindergarten is a year in which your child’s educational foundation is beginning to develop.
In Language Arts we not only learn about letters and phonics, but the beginnings of reading and writing as well. Our reading program includes read alouds, guided reading groups, learning reading behaviors, and fostering a love of reading. In writing we focus on writing words the way we hear them (stretching words out) and writing sight words. We learn that pictures have meaning, and publish student writing in a variety of ways.
Our Math program is very hands-on and we believe that children learn best through play and exploration. We focus on beginning concepts of sorting, patterning, same/different, more/fewer, counting and numbers, making sets of ten, length and height, addition and subtraction.
In Science, children investigate and understand simple patterns in their daily lives by recognizing classroom routines, daily weather patterns and seasonal changes. We begin to investigate the needs and life processes of plants and animals. Activities with shapes, magnets, sand, and water encourage further discovery, investigation, and problem solving.
In Social Studies, children learn about themselves as individuals, and as part of a family and a community. We share family traditions and celebrations, observe changes within the community, and explore American traditions, leaders and historical events.
