Fifth grade marks students’ second full year at the upper elementary level. We work hard at establishing good study habits that students will carry with them through middle school, high school, and beyond. Students also concentrate on learning a very full academic curriculum. In Language Arts, there is special focus on writing with emphasis on organization, revising to create more interest, and editing to catch errors. Students also continue to read for comprehension, and practice oral speaking skills. Fifth grade Math extends students’ facility with fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, problem solving, and introduces basic algebra. The Science units include Landforms, Oceans, Light and Sound, and “Macro to Micro” (life forms), and review of Earth and space relationships. Social Studies units focus on the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, India, Mesoamerica, Rome, as well as the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Europe.
