May 2, 2012
Dear Floris Families,
It’s hard to believe it is May already! Despite the expected summer-like weather this week, we are gearing up for a busy month of school.
This is the time of year for students to show what they know on various assessments that will be conducted in classrooms. Third through sixth graders are getting ready to shine again on the Virginia SOLs. The schedule for those assessments is below.
Additionally, teachers in grades K-2 will be assessing students’ development in reading and mathematics. We are excited to see just how far all our students have come in their knowledge and skills.
Most importantly, though, we are continually thrilled to walk into classrooms and see students’ enthusiasm for learning as they apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. For example, currently the 5th grade is wrapping up their Global Technology Awareness units, where they chose specific ancient cultures and developed questions to research. Those projects are presented electronically using various computer technologies.
As we continue to look forward into May, there are several events for you to put on your calendars:
- Ongoing: Kindergarten Registration, if you or anyone you know still needs to register your child for kindergarten for next year, please contact Donna Bradford at DLBradford@fcps.edu to set up an appointment. Please spread the word to be sure we register students as soon as possible.
- Tuesday, 5/1 at 7:00-8:00pm: PTA Meeting in the school’s Little Theater
- Thursday, 5/3 at 11:00am-12:00pm: Kindergarten Field Day
- Friday, 5/4 at 9:45-11:45: Field Day, grades 1-3
- Friday, 5/4 at 1:00-3:30pm: Field Day, grades 4-6
- Thursday, 5/10 at 7:00-7:30pm: Spring Band Concert in the school’s cafeteria (the band will perform for grades 4-6 at 2:30-3:00pm, and for grades K-3 at 3:10-3:40pm also on this date)
- Friday, 5/11 at 3:00-4:00pm: Student pep rally to gear up for the night’s games against Navy
- Friday, 5/11 at 6:00: Floris teachers and 6th graders play Navy ES in volleyball and basketball at South Lakes High School – come out and cheer loud!
- Tuesday, 5/29 at 1:45-3:30pm: SCA Dance-A-Thon
And a very special reminder that next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Our teachers are some of the hardest working in the county, and we are truly thankful they are here! If you have a moment, feel free to drop your child’s teacher a note and ask your child to show appreciation for his or her teacher’s hard work - a small word of kindness goes a long way!
Finally, looking way ahead into the next school year, please keep an eye out in your child’s Tuesday folder this week for a questionnaire about your child. When you complete and return that form, your feedback is used to determine the class placement that will best match your child’s needs, strengths, and overall enthusiasm for learning. Please do not include teachers’ names, as those requests cannot be accommodated.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
Sincerely,
Gail Porter Katie Le
