Principal’s Newsletter, May 2013
Dear Floris Families,
If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? Assessments! Once again, it is time for students to show what they know on a variety of tests that will begin this month. Our staff and students have been working so hard all year, they are more than prepared for SOLs and other assessments that will be headed their way.
Students in grades 3-6 have been preparing for online Standards of Learning tests all year. Our computer labs have been booked solid, not just for test preparation though, for all kinds of 21st century learning activities that require a variety of technological tools. The list of upcoming SOLs is on our website at http://www.fcps.edu/FlorisES/docs/SOLTestingSchedule2012-13.pdf
Additionally, teachers in grades K-2 will be assessing students’ development in reading and mathematics. We are excited to see just how far all our students have come in their knowledge and skills.
Most importantly, though, we are continually thrilled to walk into classrooms and see students’ enthusiasm for learning as they apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. For example, currently the 5th grade is wrapping up their Global Technology Awareness units, where they chose specific ancient cultures and developed questions to research. Those projects are presented electronically using various computer technologies.
As we look forward into May, there are several events to put on your calendars:

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
Sincerely,
