IMPORTANT SECURITY PROCEDURES FOR FLORIS
Floris Elementary has a security system operating to help ensure student and staff safety. The System Link Door Access program will require every exterior school door to be locked at all times. Visitors to the school will need to enter the school by pressing the buzzer located to the right of the doors at the main entrance. After being viewed by office staff on the camera monitor, the door will be unlocked remotely to allow visitors to enter the main office to sign in and obtain a visitor badge.
In addition, our afternoon student check-out procedures will also change to ensure a safe and smooth transition to the end of the student day. Students may be checked out from the main office until 1:10 on Mondays and until 3:40 Tuesday through Friday. After those times, parents may wait in the lobby for their children to exit the classroom during dismissal and take their child at that time.
SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION / FCPS EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENTS
There are several ways to determine if FCPS schools/facilities are closed:
1. Listen to your local television and radio stations for information regarding the cancellation of community activities at FCPS sites.
2. FCPS cable channel 21 on Cox cable.
3. FCPS hotline number 1.800.839.3277
4. FCPS website: www.fcps.edu and refer to the Emergency Announcements. (It is highly recommended that you register through the FCPS “Keep In Touch” program to receive school closing announcements via email)

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Prior to entering sixth grade, all students in Virginia are required to receive a booster dose of Tdap vaccine if at least five years have passed since the last dose of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccine (DTP, DTaP, DT, or Td).
The Tdap booster can be obtained from your child’s physician. If your child is 11 years old, he or she should get the Tdap immunization and documentation should be provided to the school immediately. However, if your child is still 10 years old, please check with his or her physician to see if the physician is using Boostrix (the Tdap vaccine approved for 10 year olds). If not, your child will need to wait until the eleventh birthday to receive the immunization. If the eleventh birthday is after the first day of school, your child must have a medical exemption from the doctor stating when he or she will receive the Tdap in order to attend school. For more information, please visit: http://www.fcps.edu/news/vaccine.htm
ABSENCES OR TARDINESS
Regular and on-time attendance is expected of each student. The Code of Virginia requires that any student with five or more unexcused absences be referred to the school attendance officer. Further unexcused absences will result in a petition to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. The principal, school social worker, and school attendance officer also monitor student tardiness. If your child will be absent, it is essential that parents call the Floris attendance line at 703-561-2929 before 9:30 a.m. to report the absence and reason. Absences that are not confirmed with the school by parents will be recorded as unexcused.
Any student arriving tardy must enter the building through the front doors and go directly to the office.
SCHOOL AGE CHILD CARE
School Age Child Care (SACC) cares for children before and after school in Fairfax County elementary schools. Sports, games, recreational activities, and field trips are also an integral part of the child-focused curriculum at each SACC center. A complete list of schools that provide SACC is available (PDF format) at http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ofc/Sacc.htm.
