Program Overview

Industrial technology is a laboratory-type program designed to prepare students for more effective living in our growing industrial and highly technological society. The focus is to integrate math, science, English, history, and technology skills to increase student success in their academics and prepare them for college and technical careers.

The laboratory "hands-on" approach in industrial technology provides experiences for students to assist them in discovering and developing aptitudes and interests in technology, in becoming technologically literate, and in exploring careers. The curriculum focuses on a broad spectrum of industrial technologies which include:

1. Career fields such as transportation, manufacturing, construction, electronics, and communications.

2. Materials such as woods, metals, plastics, composites, and ceramics.

3. Processes such as planning, designing, constructing, organizing, controlling, producing, operating, and servicing.

4. Optimization and problem solving

The industrial technology program emphasizes career awareness; exploration and technology orientation through activities such as role-playing; field trips; decision-making; problem solving; and the use of industry's technical language through technical writing. Students learn critical thinking skills, which are designed to help them solve practical problems in the integration of math, science, and technology. Efforts are made in all classes to use computer technology and technical curriculum to align and enhance student preparation for SOL’s.

Students develop basic skills in the use of tools and machines, plan and construct individual and group projects, and engage in learning activities relevant to their future academic roles and responsibilities as members of an industrial-technical society.
