Program Overview

The intent of the high school mathematics program is to prepare all students to use mathematics and problem-solving skills in further education or on the job. The program focuses on mastering the objectives of the SOL, problem-solving, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, applying mathematics to real-world situations, and using technology.

The FCPS High School Mathematics program includes courses from Algebra through Calculus. Each course is based upon a Program of Studies aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000. High Schools offer either the College Board Advanced Program or the International Baccalaureate Progam in mathematics and computer science.

Mission

The Math Department seeks to offer quality classes that academically enrich students seeking more than just the basic math requirements necessary for graduation. In addition to providing a variety of curriculum, the department will also meet the academic needs of the diverse student population.
Vision

The Math Department is committed to achieving the following goals:
  1. Create an atmosphere of educational excellence and a desire for individual student achievement.
  2. Develop students into effective problem solvers, capable decision makers and responsible, educated citizens.
  3. To make FCHS students and staff visible to the surrounding community as mathematically trained people.
