Program Overview
The Falls Church High School Foreign Language Department offers Spanish, French, Japanese, Latin, and American Sign Language 3.
Congratulations to two of our juniors and one senior for participating in Saturday's county-wide Modern Foreign Language Tournament, held at George Mason High School in Falls Church. Students from public and private schools across Fairfax County competed at all levels in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
In the category Oral Interpretation of Poetry and Prose--Native or Outside Experience (Spanish):
David Liendo won second place for a beautifully polished reading of the poem "A mi madre."
Esmeralda Morales won third place for her heartfelt dramatic reading of the poem "Rosa roja," written by her sister, FCHS senior Claudia Morales. In addition to reading Claudia's poem for the MFLT judges, Esmeralda offered an encore presentation at the beginning of the awards ceremony.
Congratulations also to Maritza Joaquín, who teaches both Esmeralda and David AP Spanish Language and who encouraged them throughout. Maritza--as well as Suzanne Thompson, Kristen Jones, Brian Grandjean, and Maria Mateus--spent the entire morning at the contest to support our students! This is an incredible school!
Mission
Our mission is to encourage students to develop multicultural perspectives and to promote tolerance, respect, and authentic communication. Our classes focus on the 5 “C’s” of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Communication; Culture; making Connections; Community; and Comparisons between world languages and cultures. We strive to inspire our students to become life-long learners of languages and well-prepared citizens of an increasingly connected world.
Vision
Our vision is to inspire all foreign language students to travel and continually extend their knowledge of the world; to enjoy learning about different cultures and languages; to develop their language skills to use in their work lives; and to be open-minded international citizens.

The following are various resources that we found helpful to our students:
