3nd Quarter: CURRICULUM DESCRIPTIONS

Japanese 1 |
Based on the Modern Foreign Language/ Standard of Learning (MFL/SOL) and Program of Studies (POS), during the third quarter, the students in Japanese 1 class continued to work on the Japanese Hiragana writing systems. In the writing test, more than 50 percent of the students wrote in Japanese writing systems successfully. In Lesson 6 ( Adventures in Japanese vol. 1), the students learned how to describe the characteristics of people and things. In Lesson 7 they learned to describe their weekend plan. They also learned the kanji (Chinese characters for Japanese) for the expressions for days of the week.

Based on the Modern Foreign Language Standard of Learning (MFL/SOL) and Program of Studies (POS), during the third quarter the students in Japanese 2 class studied location words in Lesson 1 ( Adventures in Japanese , vol.2). They learned how to describe the locations of people and things. Also, they learned to describe the activities of people. In Lesson 3, they learned how to describe school rules. They compared the rules in the schools in the United States and those in Japan . They learned 33 kanji characters, in addition to 46 Hiragana letters and 46 Katakana letters. In addition most of the students made haiku in Japanese and participated in the International Haiku Contest. Also, Japanese 2 students participated in the National Japan Bowl Academic competition and ranked the 10 th in the nation.

Based on the Modern Foreign Language Standard of Learning (MFL/SOL) and Program of Studies (POS), during the third quarter the students in Japanese 3 class studied about Japanese high school in Lesson 2 ( Adventures in Japanese , vol. 3). They learned to describe their school activities and to compare them to those in Japanese schools. They learned 40 additional words and 13 additional Kanji Chinese characters. All of the students participated in the international haiku contest. Also, three students competed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Haiku Contest and one student won the 3 rd place. We also participated in the Modern Foreign Language Tournament and won the third place.

Based on the Modern Foreign Language Standard of Learning (MFL/SOL) and Program of Studies (POS), during the third quarter, the students in Japanese 4 class studied Japanese housing in Lesson 7 ( Adventures in Japanese , vol. 3). The students learned to describe the houses in America as well as those Japan . In Lesson 8 they studied about the Japanese cuisine as well as table manners. They learned 80 additional words and 26 additional kanji Chinese characters. All the students participated in the international haiku contest. Also, they participated in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Haiku Contest and won the third place. |
