3rd QUARTER : CURRICULUM DESCRIPTIONS

FRENCH

French 1:

This past quarter, students were introduced to, practiced (orally and in writing) and were assessed on the vocabulary, grammar and expressions they need to talk about the following:

In Chapter 5: making suggestions; making excuses; making a recommendation; Getting someone's attention; ordering food and beverages; inquiring about and expressing likes and dislikes; paying the check

Vocabulary : To identify food and drinks served in a café, listen to and understand vocabulary for food and drinks; To classify phrases that a customer or a server might say; to use functional expressions and vocabulary to complete conversations.

Grammar : To produce forms of the verb " prendre "; to create commands with the imperative.

In Chapter 6 : making plans; extending and responding to invitations; arranging to meet someone

Vocabulary : To identify vocabulary for places and activities in town; to classify expressions for extending, accepting, and refusing invitations; to use expressions for arranging to meet someone; to listen to and understand native speakers talking about what they do when they go out.

Grammar : To produce the forms of the verb "aller"; to use the forms of the verb" vouloir "

French 2

Culture:  French province of Touraine and famous castles from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; Ivory Coast including geography, places to go, and things to do.

Literature:  Four poems by Jacques Prevert ; two African fables

Vocabulary:  Animals, Events of the School Day; Vacation Activities; Illnesses and Parts of Body; Nutrition and Exercise; Travel

Grammar:  Passe Compose with avoir and etre ; Passe Compose of Reflexive Verbs; Imperfect Tense (formation and usage); Introduction to Future Tense; New Irregular Verbs ( recevoir , devoir, mourir , naitre , se mettre , conduire )

French 3

This past quarter students were introduced to, practiced (orally and in writing) and assessed on the vocabulary, grammar and expressions they need to talk about the following:

In chapter 5: asking about and expressing intentions; expressing conditions and possibilities; asking about future plans; expressing wishes; expressing indecision; giving advice; requesting information; writing a formal letter.

Vocabulary : future choices and plans; careers

Grammar : to use the future, the conditional and inversions to form questions.

Re-entry : the subjunctive (from chapter 3); the passé compose (from chapter1, 3)

In chapter 6 : making , accepting and refusing suggestions; making arrangements; making and accepting apologies; showing and responding to hospitality; expressing and responding to thanks; quarreling.

Vocabulary : family relationships

Grammar : reciprocal verbs; the past infinitive

Re-entry : reflexive verbs (from chapter 4, 5) the imperative (chapter 1)

French 4/5/AP Language/ AP Literature

Literature:  Poetry from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance ( D'Orleans , Villon , Ronsard ,
Du Bellay ) and the fables of La Fontaine; the Little Prince

Vocabulary:  Politics and Economics; French Cuisine and Fashion; travel; Communication (languages and mass media)

Grammar:  Review of adjectives and adverbs; Review of future, conditional, pluperfect and subjunctive tenses; Review of relative and demonstrative pronouns.

In addition to the class work with French 4-5, the AP Language students have completed an AP practice exam to determine areas of individual study before the AP Exam in May.

The student in AP Literature has read the Play " Mariage of Figaro" and is currently reading the play "Tiger at the Gates "  He studied [poetry and fables with the 4-5-AP Language students.  Until the AP exam in May, he will review the poems he studied last year that are on the AP reading list.
