Fairhill Gifted and Talented Center
|
Fairhill Elementary is very excited to be opening a GT Center beginning next fall in third grade! Our center will grow each year until expanding from third – sixth grade in the year 2011-2012. The GT Center at Fairhill ES will offer identified gifted students a highly challenging instructional program that follows the FCPS Program of Studies. Differentiation in the depth, breadth, and pace of instruction has been designed to meet the needs of advanced learners with a strong emphasis on critical thinking, creative thinking, problem-solving, and decision making skills. Our GT center (Level IV) students will also participate with the Fairhill student body in school-based activities such as SCA, specials, language clubs, Fitness Fanatics, Odyssey of the Mind, Tiger Live, chess club, grade level performances, competitions, the science fair, field trips, speakers, and more!
Our center class will use gifted curriculums to allow level IV students the opportunity to explore and express their ideas with other highly able peers in math, language arts, science, and social studies. In math, GT students will participate in the Compacted Math program, Math & Logic Contest and Continental Math League, and will use a brand new math series known as M3: Mentoring Mathematical Minds (from The University of Connecticut). In language arts, we look forward to advancing their studies using units from The College of William and Mary’s Center for Gifted Education, Building Language (a word study program for gifted students by Michael Clay Thompson), WordMasters Challenge, Junior Great Books, and continuing novel studies. The science and social studies POS will also be supplemented with advanced curricular material also coming from The College of William and Mary’s Center for Gifted Education, use of interactive notebooks, and simulation units to give students first hand experience with the material being studied! We look forward to offering students the opportunity to pursue independent investigations, technology application projects, ongoing research, weekly Strategy Lab visits, problem-based learning, and Socratic Seminar discussions appropriate to each unit of study in third grade.
This is an exciting addition to the current gifted program already available to the Fairhill ES community! We welcome any questions you might have and will host an Open House in May to give Level IV parents and students the opportunity to see materials that will be used and ask any questions they may have to our “gifted team”!
