THIRD GRADE
Second Quarter Nine Week Plans
Recommended Reading List (in PDF Format)

In third grade we integrate all units of study throughout the curriculum. We will be reading science and social studies books during language arts to help your children make connections in their learning.

Language Arts
:
This quarter we will focus on historical fiction and non-fiction (informational books). All classes will read stories about ancient Egypt, ancient China, and ancient Greece. We will continue to emphasize reading strategies in both fiction and nonfiction texts (comprehension, building vocabulary, understanding literary elements, asking and answering questions, and summarizing) through guided reading groups. We will continue to review poetry and its elements. Writing focus lessons will include skills such as: sentences structure and parts of speech. We will learn to apply these skills as we begin to write two paragraphs. We will also begin to learn to organize sentences into paragraphs to prepare for informational writing. We’ll continue to review the writing process that includes proofreading for spelling, capitalization, and punctuation and revision for details and paragraph structure. Children will be required to be more aware of correct spelling patterns in their own writing. We will participate in eCART, an SOL reading and math practice assessment.

Math:

In Chapters 5 and 6 multiplication will be introduced as we learn about adding and subtraction strategies and regrouping. We will learn the facts for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. In Chapter 6 we will learn to multiply facts for 6, 7, 8, and 9. We will focus on using different strategies to teach basic multiplication facts. Please begin exposing your child to multiplication facts at home (flash cards, multiplication table, games, websites, etc.). Also students will relate subtraction to division in Chapter 8. They will also see how multiplication and division are related to each other.

Science:

Our science unit this quarter is called “Changing Earth.” Children will learn about seasonal changes, rotation of the earth, day and night, moon phases, natural disasters, energy from the sun, and more. This unit correlates with objectives from the science strands of Interrelationships in Earth/Space Systems and Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Changes.

Social Studies
:
This month we will finish learning about Egypt. We will learn about ancient Greece in November and part of December. We will begin ancient China in December and finish in January. We will study the geography, culture, government, economics, and contributions of these ancient civilizations.

Health
:
We will do a unit on Substance Abuse Prevention. At the third grade level, this unit focuses on identifying five things children can do to stay healthy, safe, and drug free, identifying constructive ways to spend free time, recognizing how commercials make us want to buy products, a review of safety precautions when taking medicines, understanding that inhaling chemical fumes is dangerous, and understanding that alcohol is a liquid which alters the way people think, feel, and behave.

Computer Technology
:
We will continue to use the mobile lab laptops to enhance our learning in many ways. We will continue to work on “Type To Learn” to teach keyboarding skills. We will learn to use the computer for research by using various selective educational internet sites. We will use the Microsoft word processing program.
