Language Arts:
We will be finishing our genre study of Adventure/Survival novels during the beginning of November. We will then turn our focus this quarter to the elements of non -fiction. Students will learn research skills as well as comparing fiction and non-fiction texts. We will culminate our study with a project on Explorers. We will continue to conduct writers’ workshop as students work to write intently. Students will focus on a variety of writing skills including sentence variety, use of conversational prompts, use of paragraphs, and proper word tense. |
Social Studies:
We will begin the quarter with a look at the early empires of Ancient Africa. We will discover how the Europeans began trade with Africa. We will then study European Exploration. We will cover a wide range of explorers as we see North America gradually become settled by Europeans. Our next big unit will be the establishment of the thirteen colonies. We will discuss the difficulties the colonists had as well as many of the causes leading up to the American Revolution. |
Math:
This quarter we will focus on finishing our study of division of whole numbers and decimals. Our graphing will include histograms, pictographs, and box-and-whisker plots. A focus on problem solving strategies and real life word problems will continue this quarter while we focus on a real-life consumer math project. There will be a Holiday Math Game Project assigned this quarter. It will be due prior to Winter Break. |
Science:
We will continue our unit on Astronomy this quarter. We will focus on what makes up our solar system, including, the sun, meteors, comets, asteroids, and the planets. After, Thanksgiving break, we will change our focus to weather. We will discuss the earth’s atmosphere, pressure systems, and extreme weather.

Health:
Students will be learning about the importance of healthy nutrition. We will be focusing on the food pyramid and the six essential nutrients vital for life and health. We will also have Family life education this quarter prior to winter break.
