Second Quarter Nine Week Plans
Recommended Reading List (in PDF Format)

Language Arts:
This quarter we will focus on historical fiction, realistic fiction, and poetry. We will emphasize the features of historical and realistic fiction. Students will learn to identify the similarities and differences among characters, use a variety of comprehension strategies (inferring, drawing conclusions, problem and solution, and main idea) to develop a deeper understanding of the text, and identify time and place of a story using text details. Students will also learn the elements of poetry with an emphasis on narrative poetry. In writing students will be learning to group common ideas into paragraphs, to develop leads and conclusions. We will continue to use the writing process for proofreading, spelling, and punctuation. Students will also learn to write in selected poetry formats. Students will also participate in the eCart, an SOL reading practice assessment.

Social Studies:

The reasons for English colonization, the influence of geography on choosing the Jamestown site, the legislative bodies of England, the impact the arrival of Africans and women had on the settlement, the interactions between the English and the Powhatans, and the hardships of the Jamestown colonists will be studied in detail. Students will explain the influence of agriculture on the institution of slavery, how cultural landscapes changed the relationship between the colony and England, how geography influenced the relocation of the capital, and how money, barter, and credit were used.
