Professional Television Production
2 credit course. One year course offered as Professional Television Production1, with option to continue for second year in Professional Television Production 2.
Course DescriptionThe Television Production class and its production company, Digital Wave Productions, trains students to enter the TV and film industries as Production Assistants (PA) in a variety of production roles. Academy students learn through traditional classroom sessions as well as extensive hands-on training using state-of-the-art gear. During the first year, students learn the terminology, theory and skill sets necessary to hold their own with professionals in the industry. All students will have the opportunity to work with Digital Wave Productions, a video production company run through the classroom. Opportunities through Digital Wave include both paid and volunteer positions where students work with actual clients, gain career experience, and build a professional resume. The Fairfax Academy production facility is equipped with cutting edge technology. Students will be trained on non-linear AVID systems and full HD cameras.
TV Studio and Production Facility
• 43’ x 43’ three camera studio with cyc, chromakey, and teleprompters
• 12’ x 24’ control room with special effects generator, 20 channels of audio, and a music channel library with over 4,000 cuts of background music
• 14 SD and HD portable digital recording systems. Each system includes camera, monitor, tripod, mics, and light kit.
• 11 top of the line AVID media composer non-linear editors
Careers
Careers are available in all three areas of film and video production: pre-production, production, and post-production. They run the gamut from writing and producing (pre-production); actual production work; to editing, promotion and distribution (post- production). Career opportunities exist in commercial television and public television, cable access channels, news channels, and special interest channels --- as well as in private industry. Because the industry is very competitive, experience and a post-secondary education are critical for success.

Instructor's Bio:
Dave Ruby is committed to sharing his expertise and passion for Film, Video, and Multi-Media Production with his students. His classroom is run with a unique combination of lecture, demonstration, case study, hands on training, independent as well as group projects, and critical analysis of student work. Emphasis is placed on introducing students to the real world working experience and the class is often run like a working production studio. Mr. Ruby brings to the Fairfax Academy a tremendous amount of creative and technical knowledge gained from direct instruction as well as many years of professional experience. After receiving a technical certificate in Video Production from the Chantilly Professional Technical Center, Mr. Ruby earned his film degree from the Pennsylvania State University. Professional experiences include working as a Freelance Director, Shooter, and Editor in the DC area. His freelance experience includes directing a USA Today news brief that was broadcast to 24 stations across the country, directing/shooting/and editing music videos and promotional vignettes for popular corporate entertainment acts, designing and authoring DVD based product catalogs with hundreds of navigation levels, and holding a multitude of positions for commercials and independent films shot on video, 16mm, and 35mm film.
