Chinese

Course Description

Students develop proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis will be on the use of these skills for communication. Owing to the unique and challenging Chinese writing system, extra effort will go towards learning to read and write in Chinese. By the end of this course, students will have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret the content of simple readings and to write simple passages. In addition to pure language content, course content will also touch upon important aspects of Chinese culture as well as upon influences of Chinese culture in the United States. In one year of this course, students may earn two foreign language credits.

Chinese 1 & 2:    Introduction to the Chinese language, building on fundamentals of all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.


Chinese 3 & 4:    Builds and expands on language fundamentals with continued emphasis on listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

 

Prerequisites

Chinese 1 & 2:     Available for students in grades 9 – 12. Grade 9 requires recommendation from instructor. No prerequisites.

Chinese 3 & 4:     Successful completion of Chinese 1 & 2 or FCPS assessment (see counselor for specific details) or Chinese teacher assessment.
