Korean Language
Students learn this intricate and exciting language through Korean arts, customs, history, culture, and current events. Students interested in accelerated language learning will benefit from this unique opportunity to learn a language that is particularly important in the global business, intelligence, and IT communities.
Fairfax Academy is the only program in Fairfax County to offer accelerated, intensive language instruction in the Korean language. Students earn two foreign language credits if they enroll in and complete the course for a full academic year.
Korean 1 & 2
Introduction to the Korean language, building on fundamentals of all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Korean 3 & 4:
Builds and expands on language fundamentals with continued emphasis on listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Prerequisites
Korean 1 & 2: Available for students in grades 9 - 12. Grade 9 requires recommendation from instructor. No prerequisites.
Korean 3 & 4: Successful completion of Korean 1 & 2 or FCPS assessment (see counselor for specific details) or Korean teacher

Instructor's Bio:
A native of Korea, has been the Korean language instructor at the Fairfax Academy since the fall of 2002. Prior to her work at the Academy, she taught in the Cheon Buk public school system in South Korea. She is a graduate of Cheon Buk National University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree, and George Mason University where she received her Master Degree in Bilingual Multicultural Education. Mrs. Johnston is certified in ESOL and in Korean language by the State of Virginia Board of Education. Under her direction, the Korean language program has grown in diversity and scope, to include Korean history, art, calligraphy, cooking, music, and State Department/Korean government sponsored student exchange programs.
