General Information
Interested in attending Fairfax Academy? Follow the steps below:
1. Meet with your School Counselor to talk about Fairfax Academy courses and your schedule.
2. Visit the Fairfax Academy class you are considering --- any Tuesday or Wednesday during February & March. Your counselor will help your arrange all the details required for the visit. (Seeing the class 'in action' can be really helpful in making your decision -- but visits are OPTIONAL)
3. Attend the Fairfax Academy Info Night, March 1st. Parents & Students are invited to meet with teachers and visit classrooms!
(The Info Night is OPTIONAL, but helpful, especially if you can't visit during the day. It's also a great time for parents to have all their questions answered.)
4. Submit a completed Fairfax Academy Application Packet (REQUIRED!). Deadline is: March 30, 2012

Student 504 Plans will be requested, if applicable, once a student is admitted.
A Waiting List will be maintained for oversubscribed courses until the opening of school.
Transportation Requests will be processed at the Academy.

More Details:
Placement Auditions are required for the following classes: Dance, Fashion Design, Music & Computer Technology, and Professional Musical
Theatre and Actor's Studio. These auditions are friendly, supportive, and non-threatening -- used to determine best class level placement.
All Auditions will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Individual Teachers will contact applicants with details about auditions
(times, how to prepare, etc).
Note: All classes, with the exception of Korean and Chinese, are open ONLY to rising juniors and seniors.
::DANCE
After submitting an Academy Application, students schedule a spring audition and perform the following:
Dance 1: Recommended for students with no formal dance training.
Students should come prepared to dance in either leotard and tights or leggings and camisole top. Clothing should be form fitting, no baggy clothes. Boys should wear sweat pants or jazz pants and a form fitting white t-shirt. If the student has ballet or jazz shoes they should wear those, however, bare feet are acceptable as well. Hair should be pulled back in a ponytail or bun. Audition will begin with a ballet barre followed by basic jazz steps and combinations across the floor.
Dance 2: Recommended for students who have been studying dance for less than 3 years or who have had a large gap in training (i.e. studied dance when they were 10). Students should come prepared to dance in either leotard and tights or leggings and camisole top. Clothing should be form fitting, no baggy clothes. Boys should wear sweat pants or jazz pants and a form fitting white t-shirt. If the student has ballet or jazz shoes they should wear those, however, bare feet are acceptable as well. Hair should be pulled back in a ponytail or bun. Audition will begin with a ballet barre followed by basic jazz steps and combinations across the floor.
Dance 3: Current dance students with 3 or more years of training in ballet and/or jazz. Students should come prepared to dance in leotard and tights or leotard and jazz pants. Boys should wear sweat pants or jazz pants and a form fitting white t-shirt. Please bring ballet slippers and jazz shoes, however, bare feet are acceptable. Clothing should be form fitting, no baggy clothes. Audition will begin with a ballet barre followed by jazz combinations across the floor. The student should come prepared with a one minute solo choreographed by the applicant or their dance instructor. The solo should reflect the style of dance in which the student is most proficient and comfortable. (no pointe solos please). Music must be on a CD or MP3 player. The dance studio will provide the CD player.
Dance 4: Current dance students with more than 5 years of training in ballet and jazz and who currently takes dance class at least three times a week. Students should come prepared to dance in leotard and tights or leotard and jazz pants. Boys should wear sweat pants or jazz pants and a form fitting white t-shirt. Please bring ballet slippers and jazz shoes, however, bare feet are acceptable. Clothing should be form fitting, no baggy clothes. Audition will begin with a ballet barre followed by jazz combinations across the floor. The student should come prepared with a one minute solo choreographed by the applicant or their dance instructor. ::PROFESSIONAL MUSICAL THEATRE and ACTOR'S STUDIO
After submitting an Academy Application, students schedule a spring audition and perform the following:
Musical Theatre Performance (MTP) 1: recommended for students with little or no experience in the performing arts (acting, dancing, or singing) but hopes to gain knowledge and experience about the craft in a professional environment. MTP1 1 minute monologue from a play, musical or other written source. No film monologues please. Monologue must be memorized. 16 bars from a musical repertoire/memorized with sheet music written in student’s key. Accompanist will be provided or you can bring your own. No a cappella Professional attitude, dress and manner are required and expected from all applicants.
Musical Theatre Performance (MTP) 2: recommended for students with middle school or high school performance experience in acting, dancing, or singing, preferably all three. Persons who are interested in continuing arts education while learning the business of making a living in the theatre. MTP 2 1 minute comedic monologue from a play, musical, or written source. No film monologues. Monologue must be memorized. 1 minute dramatic monologue from a play, musical or other written source. No film monologues. Monologue must be memorized. 32 bars of a ballad from a musical. Must be memorized. Sheet music must be written in student’s key. Accompanist will be provided or you can bring your own. No a cappella Dressed to learn a short dance combination. Professional attitude, dress and manner are required and expected from all applicants.
Musical Theatre Performance (MTP) 3 (seniors only): recommended for the serious theatre arts student already involved in performance venues both in their current school setting and in the broader theatre arts community. The student should have extensive experience in at least two of the three areas; dancing, singing and acting. Persons interested in continuing post-secondary education in musical theatre/theatre.
MTP 3 Timed 3 minute audition package:
• 3 minutes to demonstrate acting, singing, and dancing ability** prepared and perfected
(using monologue, and song package with separate dance number).
• Accompanist will be provided or you can bring your own. ** choice of dance style choreographed in your area of strength.
Music for dance should be on a CD.
• Professional attitude, dress and manner are required and expected from all applicants.
::MUSIC and COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
Acceptance into the Music and Computer Technology program will be based upon audition. During the spring audition, applicants will be asked to demonstrate the following:
• Ability to read musical notation in more than one clef
• Keyboard proficiency: Functional keyboard skills will be tested; therefore a prepared piece is not required. Students should be prepared to sight read, play scales and arpeggios, and build chords. A keyboard will be provided. (If you do not know how to play the keyboard, still attend the audition).
• Aural Skills/Interval identification -
A general knowledge of music theory, including but not limited to:
Harmony
Rhythm
Instrumentation/Orchestration
Texture
Form
::FASHION DESIGN
After submitting an Academy application, students will schedule a spring audition. The audition for Fashion Design will consist of three parts:
1. Two Drawing Exercises: a still life
and a garment on a fashion figure. All materials for the studio performance will be furnished at the audition.
2.
A Short Interview with the instructor and the Academy counselor
3.
An Optional Portfolio Review.
Bring any work that shows your interest in fashion & design: fine arts, constructed garments, marketing projects, computer graphics, rough sketches, etc.

NOTE: The portfolio review is optional, however if you have any projects that demonstrate your interest and abilities in fashion, art, and design it is highly recommended to show them on the day of your audition.

NOTE: Applications received after March 30th, will be processed and held. Students will be considered for enrollment, as seats become available. Students must still audition, even if they have applied late.
::Course Enrollment Priorities
The counselor along with the Academy Staff will use the following guidelines to determine enrollment when the course is oversubscribed. When courses are oversubscribed, students who meet the following enrollment criteria will be selected in the following manner:
1. Completed application and copy of transcript received according to deadline date.
2. Juniors will be given first priority in two-year programs.

4. Instructor and/or counselor recommendations or student statement.
5. Academy Counselor will review student’s records and may require an interview/audition or portfolio review to determine appropriate placement and eligibility.
