Fairfax County Public Schools is proud to announce the awarding of a Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to the school division. The “Living Fit in Fairfax” project is a three-year grant project. The goal is to improve the health and fitness literacy of students by addressing needs revealed in the CDC School Health Index, Fairfax County Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and FCPS fitness data. The project will embrace coordinating nutrition, fitness, and physical activity opportunities for K-12 students. This project is fitness based and supports student achievement of the VA SOLs for health and physical education.
Twenty-four elementary schools, ten middle schools, and ten high schools were selected for the first year of the Living Fit in Fairfax project. Your school has been selected as one of the first-year schools for this amazing opportunity and you have been selected as the lead teacher for the project. Some of the benefits included with participation in the grant are new fitness and nutrition curriculum, new equipment, web-based program that will guide instruction, and lead teacher training.
Goals for the Living Fit in Fairfax Project
- To acquire and implement a curriculum that integrates instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition, concepts of fitness and health, increases student activity behavior, and creates opportunities for the development of positive social/cooperative skills through participation in activity.
- To increase students’ understanding of healthy nutritional habits and the relationship of nutrition to health, performance, and appearance.
- To implement online, individualized nutrition and fitness planning for students to motivate them to manage and improve nutrition, fitness, activity, sleep, and hydration behaviors.
- To upgrade and expand online fitness/nutrition/activity behaviors portfolios, as well as assessment software that will disaggregate, analyze, and report data to provide immediate, intermediate, and long range results to students, families, and administration, tracking and reporting progress and needs for program change.
- To provide nutrition and fitness equipment needed to build a comprehensive program in that provides a natural school to life transition for students.
- To build on current community collaboration and partnership opportunities to advance the goals of the program by extending learning beyond the classroom.
To meet grant requirements, this project includes measures for data collection. The data collection process will include random selection of students from participating schools. Students will be measured on daily physical activity, cardiovascular fitness levels, and nutrition five times this year. These measurements will be assessed through pedometer and activity logs, 20-meter shuttle (PACER), and nutrition logs. Additional data collection includes fitness measures, knowledge assessments, and surveys.
Community involvement is another component of the project. The PEP grant allows us to focus on students outside of the school day. Supporting physical education programs, SACC and Neighborhood and Community Services will engage in fitness and nutrition activities for students before and after school.
I’m excited that Edison was selected as a part of the first year of the project. Living Fit in Fairfax represents a turning point for physical education in providing health and fitness literacy and improved activity for all students. I’m looking forward to working with our Edison community as we continue to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for our students.
