ESOL Mission Statement
The mission of the FCPS ESOL Program is to develop the English
proficiency of students while advancing their academic achievement,
and to support them in becoming productive, contributing citizens
in the United States and an ever-changing global society.

ESOL (LA) 571011, 12, 13
Grade: 9-11 Credit: 3
Prerequisite: none
Students engage in listening, speaking, reading and writing
English through integrated language arts curriculum. Students
develop beginning literacy skills and a understanding of basic
content concepts. They become familiar with the culture
and structure of an American high school and the community.
Placement is made following assessment by the ESOL entry assessment
by the ESOL teacher. This course earns elective credit
and maybe repeated.
ESOL I (A) 571014, 15, 16
Grade: 9-11 Credit: 3
Prerequisite: none
Students engage in listening, speaking, reading, in writing
English through an integrated language arts curriculum.
Building both on their prior knowledge and on newly introduced
material, they prepare to enter a academic content classes. They
become familiar with the culture and structure of an American
high school and the community. Placement is made following
assessment by the ESOL Entry Assessment staff at Devonshire
and the ESOL teacher. This course may be repeated for credit.
ESOL I (Advanced A) 571017,
18, 19
Grade: 9-11 Credit: 3
Prerequisite: none
Students engage in listening, speaking, reading and writing
been pushed to an integrated language arts curriculum. Building
on both the prior knowledge and on newly introduced material,
they prepare to enter academic content classes. It is highly
recommended that students in this course also be enrolled
in Concept Social Studies and Concept Sciences as preparation
for World History and Geography I and for Biology. Placement
is made following assessment by the ESOL assessment staff
and by the ESOL teacher. This course earns elective credits
and maybe repeated for additional elective credits.
ESOL II (B1) 572091, 572, 092
Grade: 9-11 Credit: 2
Prerequisite: none
Students continue to engage in listening, speaking, reading,
and writing. They read a variety of fiction and non-fiction
and expand their understanding of writing as a vocabulary
and understanding of the structure of English. Placement in
this course is made following assessment by the ESOL teacher
and/or ESOL entry assessment staff. 572091 is a literature-based
class and 572092 is a content-base class. A total of two credits
from 572091 and 572092 may be used as foreign language credits. This
course may be repeated for elective credit.
ESOL III (B2) 573000
Grade: 9-12 Credit: 1
Prerequisite: none
Students read a variety of literature and relate life situations
to literary themes. They continue to develop their writing
skills and continue to study the structure of the English
language through a variety of writing assignments. Students
refine their listening and speaking skills through class discussions
and oral presentations. Placement in this course is made
following assessment by the ESOL teacher and/or the ESOL Entry
Assessment staff at Devonshire. Students may be recommended
for exit from the ESL program after meeting established criteria
at the end of this course. This course may be repeated for
elective credit. This course may be used as one English credit.
