Grading and Reporting

The following grading and reporting information represents modifications to the Fairfax County Grading and Reporting to Parents document as it relates to our modified 4 x 4 schedule. This information was developed collaboratively by teachers, parents, students, and FCPS personnel from the Department of Information Technology (DIT) and Student Services Offices.

Grading System

The Fairfax County Public Schools' grading system is as follows:
*AP/IB Course Quality Equivalency

SCALE SYMBOL NORMAL *AP/IB
94-100 A 4.0 4.5
90-93 B+ 3.5 4.0
84-89 B 3.0 3.5
80-83 C+ 2.5 3.0
74-79 C 2.0 2.5
70-73 D+ 1.5 2.0
64-69 D 1.0 1.5
63-0 F 0.0 0.0

For the additional .5 course quality equivalency, the student is required to take each IB/AP exam for courses in which they are enrolled.

The school year is divided into a fall and spring term. Each term is 90 days long and has two reporting periods.

Interims/Report Cards

All students are issued mandatory interim reports for all classes during each reporting period. Teachers indicate on these reports what factors are contributing to any less than satisfactory performance. Letters confirming these reports are mailed directly to parents. Report cards are mailed home at the end of each reporting period. In addition, teachers of all courses, except embedded courses, must issue updated interims to any students whose grade drops two letters or falls below a C average between the time interims are issued and grades are assigned. Teachers will record the method and date of contact for updated interims. The final course grade is determined by averaging the quarter grades together and include a final examination or culminating activity grade. Parents should carefully review all grade information.
