Oracle Course Description

What is Oracle?
Oracle is the largest vendor of database systems in the world with the largest market share for both MS-Windows and Unix based databases. Oracle is also the second largest independent software company in the world. All 10 of the world's largest Web sites- from Amazon.com to Yahoo! - use Oracle.

Oracle Level 1 Course Description
Students learn to analyze complex business scenarios and create a data model, a conceptual representation of an organizations information. Students implement their database design (data model) by creating a physical database using SQL, the industry-standard database programming language. The course will cover advanced web page components which will allow students to build dynamic database driven web sites. In addition to Oracle, the course will use open source software, DBDesigner, MySQL databases & PHP scripts. Internships may be available for students who excel in this course.

Oracle Level 2 Course Description
This course covers PL/SQL, a procedural language extension to SQL. Through an innovative project-based approach, students learn procedural logic constructs such as variables, constants, conditional statements and iterative controls. Students have the opportunity to sit for the second of two exams required to earn the Oracle Certified Associate.

Oracle Curriculum Overview
Oracle curriculum enhances the rigor and relevance of academic programs by integrating the technical subject matter and professional skills that employers are demanding and in the 21st century workplace. A strong emphasis is placed on students demonstrating employability skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, resume building and interviewing, group collaboration and project management. Students also learn and apply higher-order thinking skills that mirror the level of excellence
expected in higher education. Using the latest online learning technologies, students demonstrate valuable skills that will give them an advantage in pursuing these types of future careers and more: database administration, computer engineering, consulting, technology manager, software engineer, systems analyst, information systems manager and project management.

Level 1 Course Contents:
Data Modeling - Students learn how to build a database from the ground up, from figuring out customer needs to the actual physical building and manipulating of the database.
DBDesigner - a visual database design system that integrates database design, modeling, creation and maintenance into a single, seamless environment.
SQL - Structured Query Language is used to retrieve information out of relational databases such as Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, Access, and MySQL.
SQL*Plus - An Oracle interface to the database which allows easy access to SQL and PL/SQL commands.

Certification/Verified Credits
These classes prepare students to pass the Oracle SQL and Oracle PL/SQL exams. Students that pass an exam receive 1 verified credit. Students who have previously taken another business course receive 2 verified credits upon passing an exam. Exams would normally cost $100 but since we are part of the Oracle Academy students get to take the exams in their classroom for $57.

Why would I want to get Oracle Certification? Is it widely recognized?
Oracle certifications are one of the most sought after certifications in both Information Technology and the Internet Economy. There is an increasing need for developers, engineers, and administrators to support the technologies Oracle is providing. In a recent salary survey of certified professionals by Certification Magazine, Oracle Certified Professionals ranked Number 1 for the highest average salaries earned on the job. The survey involved members of the top certification programs in the IT industry. The average salary for an Oracle DBA(Database Administrator) was $75,941, while an Oracle OCP(Oracle Certified Professional) averages $61,301.

Professional Organizations
The Oracle program is affiliated with and participates in competitions for FBLA, Skills USA and the Oracle Corporation. Competition categories include database design, webpage design and general technology.

Scott Evans, Instructor

Scott Evans has been teaching at the Academy since 1999. He also serves as the Academy website administrator and he teaches in the Business Department at Edison HS. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Information Systems. He is certified in Oracle SQL and was previously a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). Prior to teaching at the Academy he worked as a Marine Systems Engineer and Network Administrator for various government contractors. Mr. Evans served six years in the United States Navy on nuclear submarines.
