Summer Reading Program
All Dranesville students are encouraged to read throughout the summer. The Fairfax County Public Libraries provide an excellent source of interesting reading material on all levels. Students may also participate in the public library’s summer reading program by registering at the library. Dranesville students are also encouraged to keep a record of the titles read on the enclosed log. Parents are asked to sign the log. In September, students who return their signed log to school will be recognized with a special certificate.
The Fairfax County School Board requires every student, grades five through eleven, to read one book written by these suggested authors. In addition, Dranesville ES recommends students in grades 1 - 4 read at least one book from that list. The Dranesville staff recommends that rising sixth graders read at least two books from the county list and that In addition, sixth grade teachers at Dranesville have developed follow-up activities for the books read and these activities will be implemented in the fall.
The Summer Writing Program will take the form of a letter. We invite your child to write a letter of introduction to his or her new teacher. The letter may reference student interests, hobbies, summer activities, family members, pets, and may include a drawing.
We encourage you to read with and to your children, to have them read to you, to discuss what is being read, and to simply enjoy reading.
The Reading Log should be turned in to the library during the first week of school. The letter should be turned in to the teacher during the first week of school.
