Dogwood Elementary School is committed to providing a challenging curriculum for all students. The school celebrates the diversity of its students. The strong, dedicated teaching staff holds high expectations for all students. Teachers, students and parents work together to ensure that students experience academic success and students grow to be good citizens in a safe environment.

Our third quarter is in full swing and our focus on student learning remains strong. Our grade level teams are in the midst of analyzing quarterly student data and creating differentiated learning experiences that meet the needs of students within each classroom. Attention to enrichment and intervention is a priority for our Dogwood staff. It is incredibly exciting to see such focus on learning!

A Success! Morning Meeting & Muffins
On February 14th we hosted parents for a special Valentine’s Day morning at Dogwood. Parents joined their child(ren) and participated in classroom Morning Meeting activities. Following classroom Morning Meetings, parents gathered with Dogwood staff to talk and learn more about our Responsive Classroom “happenings”. It was exciting to see so many families.

New FCPS Progress Reports Coming our Way
FCPS is introducing a new elementary progress report that is based on curriculum standards. The new progress report will:

  1. Provide parents with comprehensive information about how their child is learning.
  2. Align with the Program of Studies (POS) curriculum students are learning.
  3. Provide teachers with resources to communicate a more exact and consistent assessment.
  4. Provide parents with comprehensive information about how their child is learning.
  5. Incorporate research-based best practices in student grading and reporting.
  6. Report Life, Work, and Citizenship skills separately from academic achievement.

During the 2011-12 school year, selected elementary schools will be involved in various phases of testing prior to the all system roll out for the 2012-13 school year.

It’s Getting Colder!
Dogwood school doors open daily at 8:15 AM. Please help us keep students safe and warm this winter by helping them arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 AM. When students arrive before 8:15 AM, we have no supervision and students must wait outside.

School Closings: Be sure to watch the morning news report and/or visit the Fairfax County Public Schools website (www.fcps.edu) to learn about school delays or closings this winter when winter weather comes our way.
