Purpose
Intersession is a one to two week period at the end of every quarter during which students are able to take classes at Dogwood that are interactive, creative, and fun! Intersession is optional, families may use this time for other activities, family time, etc.
Students attending Intersession participate in a wide variety of classes. Classes are offered in the areas of language arts, science, social studies, math, fine arts, technology, and physical education. In addition, Intersession classes offer reinforcement and enrichment opportunities for Dogwood students. Intersession classes are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Each student can sign up for two Intersession classes that are held daily. Some are held during the morning (A.M.) and others are held during the afternoon (P.M). In some cases, your child’s teacher will recommend a specific Intersession class for your child if he/she feels that a particular class will support and enhance your child’s academic progress. Parents may choose to have their child attend only one Intersession class (either the AM or PM session) however, bus transportation is not provided home for students in the middle of the day.
Time/Schedule Breakfast begins at 8:15 a.m.

Registration forms will be sent home in Tuesday folders on September 22, 2009. Registration will run from Wednesday, Spetember 23 through October 2, 2009. You may download a registration form from this site: Teachers will collect forms from students each day and send them to the Intersession Office.
Dogwood’s Parent Liaison, Lilia Boyd, is available to assist families with Spanish translation when registering their children for Intersession. If you need Spanish assistance with registration, please call (703) 262-3100.
Class Assignment Procedures
It is our desire to place every child in at least one of his/her choices. However, classes are not guaranteed. Those who register on the first day will have a better chance of getting their first choice. At the conclusion of the first day, any class that is full will be closed.
Transportation
Transportation will be provided to students who normally ride the bus. The buses will run the normal routes before and after school. If your child attends ONLY an AM class, you are responsible for picking him or her up at the end of the AM session (10:30 Monday, 12:15 Tuesday – Friday). If your child chooses to attend only a PM class, they should arrive at 10:30a.m. Monday, and 12:15 p.m. Tuesday – Friday. Students attending half-day should check in and out of the main office.
Meals
Breakfast will be served during Intersession. Children will buy breakfast and lunch as they always do. Your child MUST bring lunch money or have two (2) weeks' worth of money on his or her lunch card for Intersession. Please provide A SNACK for your child each day.
SACC/Dismissal
SACC (School Age Child Care) will operate as usual. Buses will run on a normal schedule. Kiss N’ Ride will operate as usual.
Attendance
The courses are designed as self-contained two-week units. Students are expected to attend the entire Intersession unless other arrangements are made.
Discipline
Expectations for students during Intersession are the same for students during the regular school year. Students attending Intersession must comply with the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for Fairfax County Public Schools and the Dogwood Expectations for behavior. Students who disrupt the learning environment will be referred to Ms. Aiello, Intersession Coordinator and will be disciplined according to FCPS regulations.
