Description:
Creative Writing enriches the regular English program. The course involves students in the following:
  • Integrating the six strands of writing, reading, literature, language study, speaking and listening, and viewing

  • Using writing as a way of learning

  • Studying language history and usage as part of the writing and reading process

  • Reading literature as models of excellence and as a source of techniques for student writing

  • Acknowledging that reading and writing are skills that support each other

Creative Writing focuses on the fictional forms that traditionally emphasize personal expression.

Creative Writing may rely on impassioned opinion, fiction, and nonfiction. The course may employ rhetorical techniques such as comparison and contrast, and may require research.

Creative Writing gives students opportunities to develop their writing skills, building on what they have learned in their regular English courses. The course challenges students in different ways and provides extended study for students interested in developing their writing skills.
