Sponsored by the Virginia Science Educators Leadership Association (VSELA) In Conjunction with Fairfax County Public Schools Date: Saturday, April 1, 2006 Registration: 7:30 a.m. to 8:05 a.m. Opening Ceremony: 8:10 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. Events: 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Award Ceremony: 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Place: Langley High School, McLean, Virginia Team registration fee: $100 per team Competitions: Grades 9 - 12 (Division C) Science Olympiad events are designed to use a variety of intellectual and practical skills. Some events call for a quick recall of specific facts, while others require concept development, a process skill, or an application of a specific concept. Some events may require a student or a group of students to work cooperatively to build an apparatus. Points are assessed to each team based on national judging criteria for each event. Ribbons and medals are presented to students who earn first, second or third place for each event, and trophies are presented to the top three scoring teams. The first place team will represent Virginia at the National Competition, on May 19 and 20, 2006 at Indiana University, Bloomington campus. A team can have no more than 15 members. A high school team can have no more than 7 seniors. Each event follows strict national guidelines, which are contained in the Coaches Manual and Rules Division C (Gr. 9-12) that will be provided to each registered team's coach.
