Using the Internet in the Middle/High School Classroom

Course # 1182 / 30 recertification points, 1 non-college credit

Course Description

This course examines curriculum-based activities or projects that incorporate World Wide Web sites and other Internet tools. Class time includes discussions of various topics related to the educational and professional applications of the Internet, including managing its use in a classroom or school lab and using directory and search tools. Above all, this class is an opportunity to take an in-depth look at how the Internet can best be used for teaching at the middle and high school level.

The following topics will be covered in this class:

  • Instructional project sites on the web;
  • An introduction to the WebQuest and CyberGuide structures;
  • Online curriculum; online lesson plan sites;
  • Basic web page design (using Netscape Composer);
  • Search tools for finding material on the web;
  • Assessing the validity and usefulness of information found on the Internet;
  • Classroom management strategies for using the Internet;
  • Copyright and ethical issues relating to the instructional use of the Internet

Each participant in this class will create a curriculum-based project that incorporates World Wide Web sites and other Internet tools. This project will be a useful and usable lesson/unit that addresses specific SOL or POS objectives. The form of the project may vary, but because the class will explore WebQuests and CyberGuides in detail, it is likely that the project would be one of these forms.
