| Using the Internet in the Elementary Classroom

Course Description
This course is designed to address appropriate and effective use of the Internet in the elementary classroom. Participants in this course will explore a variety of educational and professional activities and resources available on the web. Topics include Search Strategies, Website Evaluation, WebQuests, CyberGuides, Internet Scavenger Hunts, and more. Class lessons and activities are intended to model appropriate strategies for integrating curriculum and the wealth of web-based resources. Strategies for classroom management will also be discussed. Students will design and create one or more curriculum related projects of their choice. A lesson plan that demonstrates effective integration of the Internet with curriculum will also be written.
Although each section uses a specific platform (Macintosh or Windows), the instruction is largely platform independent. Either platform can be used outside of class to complete the work.
Prerequisites
· Internet Fundamentals or equivalent experience.
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word or similar word processing program.
· Internet access outside of class, with version 4 or higher of either Netscape or Internet Explorer.
· FCPS Outlook or other email account.
Book and Software Information
There is no book required for this course. Participants must have AppleWorks 5 or higher or Microsoft Office 2000 or higher installed on their computer in order to complete out of class assignments.
TSIP Information
Successful completion of this course will validate standards 5-8 of the Virginia Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIP).
