| Technology in the Middle/High School Social Studies Classroom

Course Description
This course is designed for the Middle- and High- School Social Studies teachers. The course will introduces an array of strategies and resources for incorporating technology into the standards-based social studies classroom. Students will be asked to use and evaluate web resources, create multimedia presentations, utilize spreadsheets for data analysis and implement other classroom software into the social studies curriculum. Instruction will center on the evaluation of existing resources and the application of these in the classroom. Teachers will be asked to create several lesson plans using the available technology as well as evaluate lesson plans from others in the class. Due to the type of instruction and evaluation, attendance will be mandatory for each class.

- Using Online Primary Sources
- Integrating Multimedia Applications
- Integrating Spreadsheets
- Accessing Information Archives on the World Wide Web
- Using Inspiration Software in the Social Studies Curriculum
- Evaluating Software for Instructional Use
Project/Lesson Plan
Each course participant will develop a lesson plan that integrates a software application within the social studies curriculum. Projects will be derived from exposure to various applications within the course.
Prerequisites
In order to successfully complete this course you should have facility with basic operation of the Win98/2000/Me Operating System. In addition, basic knowledge of word-processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications will be helpful.
TSIP Information
Successful completion of this course will validate standards 5-8 of the Virginia Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIP).
