Course Description
This course is designed for the novice computer user who needs to learn basic computers skills quickly. Participants learn the basics of using a computer operating system, using and applying major productivity tools (word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software), the Outlook communciations system, and the World Wide Web. Participants will learn to incorporate graphics into their documents from sources that include digital cameras, scanners and web pages. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of how to use these tools as part of their teaching.
Topics covered in this class will include:
- Computer Operations
- Using the Internet
- Basic skills with Outlook
- Searching/Organizing the Web
- Introduction to word processing
- Introduction to spreadsheets
- Introduction to presentation software
- Introduction to databases
- Introduction to integrating technology use in the classroom
Course Requirements:
- Participants must attend all 15 sessions and complete all assignments.
- Participants must complete all class activities and homework assignments.
- In addition, all participants must complete an instructional integration project that will be presented to the class in the final session.
- Participants should bring at least two floppy disks to each class (or one Zip disk).
Prerequisites
For course sections using AppleWorks, all participants must have a computer with AppleWorks 6 or higher, Outlook 2001, and version 4 or higher of a web browser (Internet Explorere or Netscape Navigator) installed in order to complete the required out of class assignments.
For course sections using Microsoft Office, all participants must have Microsoft Office 2000 or higher, Outlook 2000 or higher and version 4 or higher of a web browser (Internet Explorere or Netscape Navigator) installed in order to complete the required out of class assignments.
No specific skills are required or expected.
TSIP Information
Successful completion of this course will certify participants in all eight standards of the Virginia Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIP).
