Advanced Placement Summer Institute
Fairfax County Public Schools, in cooperation with the College Board, is pleased to offer the 2010 Summer Institute for teachers of Advanced Placement (AP) as part of a continuing effort to assist our teachers in meeting the needs of our high-ability students. This summer’s institute will include AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, AP Latin, AP French Language, AP German Language, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP World History, AP Government and Politics: U.S., AP Government and Politics: Comparative, AP U.S. History, AP Economics, AP Psychology, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Studio Arts. The AP SUmmer Institute will be held June 28 - July 2 at a FCPS high school to be announced. Registration for FCPS teachers will be available on My PLT starting January 2; registration for all other teachers will be available on this website after the first of the year as well.

ADVANCED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The Advanced Placement (AP) program provides rigorous academic coursework in the major subject fields, with course content designed at a college level. Courses are offered in English, social studies, science, foreign languages, math and fine arts. AP courses are open to any student who is interested in academic rigor. A student enrolled in any AP course must take the AP examination to receive the .5 weighted grade. AP courses are recognized for college credit by many universities in the United States and abroad.
The AP program is offered at Centreville, Chantilly, Fairfax, Falls Church, Herndon, Langley, Madison, McLean, Oakton, West Potomac, West Springfield, Westfield and Woodson high schools and Hayfield, Lake Braddock, and South County secondary schools. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program provides a comprehensive rigorous education emphasizing analytical thinking, reading and writing skills with an international perspective. It is an advanced level college preparatory program open to highly motivated 11th and 12th grade students who seek academic rigor. A student can earn a full IB diploma by completing courses in 6 areas – English, foreign language, social studies, science, math, and elective. Beyond completing the course requirements, diploma students are required to engage in community service, individual research, and Theory of Knowledge class. Students may also choose to earn IB certificates for individual IB courses. All students enrolled in an IB course are required to take the end-of-course exam. Students must take the end-of-course exam to receive the .5 weighted grade. IB courses are recognized for college credit by many universities in the United States and abroad.
