Technology Tools

Course Description

Technology Tools is a middle school optional course offering that will provide students with the skills necessary to operate a keyboard using proper keyboarding technique. Emphasis is on automaticity of quick finger motions and correct keystroking techniques. Students will then use these keyboarding skills to enhance their proficiency with tool software applications including word processing, databases, and spreadsheets. They will also acquire skills with presentation and electronic research applications. Assessment will be based on the student's ability to demonstrate competencies on the indicators in meeting the benchmarks under each standard.


Objectives

  1. Students will develop a minimal touch typing skill that demonstrates automaticity and a words per minute rate that is faster than a student’s handwriting speed.
  2. Students acquire a skill level that will enable them to use computer software applications as basic communication tools.

Standards

  • Standard 1Students will be able to identify and use the tools of technology.
  • Standard 2: Students communicate through application software.
  • Standard 3: Students will process, store, and retrieve electronic information.

Benchmarks

  • Standard 1
    • Benchmark 1-1: Students identify basic computer components and have a knowledge of technology.
    • Benchmark 1-2: Students demonstrate competency in the operation of their computer system.
    • Benchmark 1-3: Students demonstrate proper keyboarding technique.
    • Benchmark 1-4: Students develop automaticity in the use of the keyboard.
    • Benchmark 1-5: Students demonstrate growth in speed and accuracy.

  • Standard 2
    • Benchmark 2-1: Students apply keyboarding skills to revise and edit a written document.
    • Benchmark 2-2: Students communicate using word processing application software.
    • Benchmark 2-3: Students communicate using database and spreadsheet applications.
    • Benchmark 2-4: Students communicate using a presentation slide show application.
    • Benchmark 2-5: Students explore the use of technology in various careers.

  • Standard 3
    • Benchmark 3-1: Students demonstrate ability to use electronic research tools.
