Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) provide specific standards that describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in language arts. The standards assist language arts teachers at each grade level in understanding their role and responsibility in teaching the specific English standards to ensure that all students are prepared for the Grade 8 English and Writing Assessments. The document also assists students and parents in understanding students' present knowledge and abilities as well as goals. SOL Literature, Research, Reading and Writing assessments in Grade 8 include test items directly related to language arts standards for grades 6 through 8.
