Internet Safety

Legislation approved by the 2006 General Assembly and signed by Governor Kaine requires school divisions to amend their acceptable Internet use policies to include a component on Internet safety for students. This Internet safety component must be integrated within a division's instructional program.

The Superintendent of Public Instruction has issued guidelines to school divisions regarding instructional programs related to Internet safety. These Guidelines and Resources for Internet Safety in Schools are publically available at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Technology/OET/internet-safety-guidelines.shtml

VDOE Guide Cover

This booklet contans a Description of Law, pages describing what various stakeholder groups should know regarding Internet Safety, and lists many Web-Based Resources on Internet Safety.

FCPS and i-SAFE

Fairfax County Public Schools is partnering with i-SAFE to provide Internet safety education in all K-12 schools, including Professional Development for faculty and staff, curriculum and leadership opportunities for students, and resources for parents and the community at large.

i-SAFE Inc. is the leader in Internet safety education. i-SAFE is a non-profit foundation whose mission is to educate and empower youth to make their Internet experiences safe and responsible. The goal is to educate students on how to avoid dangerous, inappropriate, or unlawful online behavior. i-SAFE accomplishes this through dynamic K-12 curriculum and community outreach programs to parents, law enforcement, and community leaders. It is the only Internet safety foundation to combine these elements.

Visit the FCPS i-SAFE site at www.isafe.org/fcps.

i-SAFE is available to all FCPS personnel, parents, and community members.

All instructional personnel must complete i-SAFE Internet safety Professional Development Training.

i-SAFE student lessons will be made available to FCPS teachers upon completion of the training. FCPS will implement the i-SAFE curriculum beginning with the 2008-2009 school year.
