Preparing today's high school students to become tomorrow's community leaders. Sponsored by a partnership between Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools.

PROGRAM GOALS

The goal of the Fairfax County Youth Leadership Program is to help high school students gain an understanding and appreciation of how local government impacts their everyday lives. The curriculum and activities are designed to develop citizenship skills and encourage participants to become active, involved citizens in the future.

Participants will learn how government addresses community issues and helps people solve problems. They will meet key decision makers in government and gain insight into the services County government provides. Through a paid summer internship, training opportunities and site visits, participants will expand their knowledge of public service and their own community.

This program is a component of the "Closest to the People" initiative which was established to to help young students in middle and high school understand the link between local government and their everyday lives, and to inspire them to become engaged citizens willing to share their ideas and bring their energy to help develop solutions to issues communities face in the new millennium.
