Physics
FCPS supports making physics courses accessible to all students. To accomplish this, four introductory courses--Active Physics, Physics of Technology, Physics 1, and Physics 1 GT/Honors are offered in the schools. Students who wish to continue their physics education can take Advanced Placement (AP) Physics, International Baccalaureate (IB) Physics, or Engineering Physics. Over 50% of FCPS students take introductory physics. All physics courses are technology-based and incorporate graphing calculators, CBLs, computers, probeware, and various software programs.
Active Physics, developed by the American Physical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers, is targeted at students who are really struggling in math. Physics of Technology is a technology-based program taught at Chantilly Academy, Marshall Academy, and Edison Academy. Physics 1 and Physics 1 GT /Honors are taught at all schools. IB Physics is taught at Mount Vernon, Stuart, Marshall, Robinson, Edison, South Lakes, Lee and Annandale High Schools. AP Physics is taught at the other high schools.
